The celebration continues this week as we recognize Polish American Heritage Month with a number of activities…
Thanks to all of you came out to join us for our first Tailgate at the YSU football game last Saturday. Angela and John Messenger were great hosts and showed us they Penguin Spirit! With our banner on display, we had a number of people stop by to talk about their Polish roots who had never heard of our efforts. We’re sorry for the confusion as to which lot we would be set up within. Next time we will get it right!
On Monday the weather held it together just long enough for Marianne Poprik, Community Outreach Coordinator, to conduct an educational ceremony in Poland’s Peterson Park to honor General Casimir Pułaski. Known as the “Father of the American Calvary,” Pułaski volunteered to fight in the American Revolution because he believed in our cause and died at the Battle of Savannah. We learned about more about this patriot from the informative talk given by Francis Rutkowski, VP of the Polish American Congress-Ohio Division, and the documentary film shown later that evening. He was joined by PAC-OH President John Borkowski. The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown used the occasion to make a donation of newly released children’s books about the two generals featured in the park sculpture to the Youngstown Public Library, accepted by Development Director Deb Liptak. All agreed the highlight again was watching the two dozen message balloons released by Lucas Mazur float away to tell some distant recipient about Pułaski.

Project Update: Good news!! Just today John Cyngier, District 9 Commander of the Polish Army Veteran's Association of America, received a check from his national office for $1500 toward relocating the Veteran’s Monument. An additional $5,000 has been pledged. But don’t think your help still isn’t needed. We have a ways to go on this project. Click here for info. Lisa Lotze, chair of this project, is in ongoing meetings with officials around the region regarding locations that are both relevant and accessible. We still hope to make this move before the snow flies, so we will keep you posted
Housekeeping: October is the beginning of our new programming year so it is time for some changing of the guard. PolishYoungstown would like to extend a heartfelt Dziękujemy to Tom Kusiowski II and Marta Mazur who are stepping down as chairs of PHH and the Education Committee, respectively. These folks have really gotten these programs up and running and we are very grateful for their help. At the same time, we would like to welcome aboard, Sean Petiya. Sean will be working as a designer to help relieve the burden of our plethora of art projects for Agata who is needed by Lilliana and her sibs right now. If you would like to join us, we welcome the opportunity to talk about it. There are opportunities on the PHH, Education and Genealogy committees as well as a need for a Team member lawyer, and Trumbull and Columbiana representatives.
