I am sitting at my hotel desk in Old Town Krakow just inside the ancient city walls composing this letter while listening to someone practice thru the open windows at the Krakow Music Conservatory next door and an unrecognizable bird chirps in the park outside my window. Occasionally the loud alternating blare of a European siren breaks thru the peacefulness…You might think it would be seem hard to remember what it happening in Polish Youngstown. But, last night, sitting at a café in the rynek at dusk people watching in the shadows of St Mary’s Church, my first thought was “This would make a great location for Polish Happy Hour!”

You are always on my mind! I hope you are not too bored by the tales and videos of our trip. It is my way of sharing the experience with you from so far away. I am hoping to inspire you to consider making the journey yourself…we are off to tour the Salt Mines today so make sure you check back to our travel log for updates and pictures. It hasn’t been the technological breeze we had hoped but it gets there eventually. IF you haven’t done so, check out the latest updates HERE.

It will be much easier to get to the Poland Village Parade on Friday and join in the community celebration there. If you can’t make it this week, how about Monday, July 5th in Canfield Independence Day Parade? Polish Youngstown will be participating in the parades and welcomes you to march or ride along and show your support! Contact our community outreach coordinator, Marianne Poprik for more info.

And if a parade isn’t your speed, baseball has got to be! Mark your calendars and join us for Polish Nite at the Scrappers on Thursday, July 8th.  It is $1 Buck Nite so it is an evening that can fit every budget! Matt and are pals over there have also graciously offered to open up the picnic grove for us. That was great last year..great place to hang with friends, drink some Zywiec, eat kielbasa and watch the game. If you want in on that part of things, let us know now so we can save you a spot. Details are here. Throw on you red and white and come on out! There may even be some polka dancing thrown in!

It’s hard to believe that we are only two months away from our biggest event of the year—Polish Day 2010. To get you the details and help share our excitement, we are launching some web space just for this. Click here  to learn about special company can get involved in the Cultural Garden workshops, marketplace tent sales, volunteer spots or share in the sponsorship and program book opportunities. It has gotten bigger and better every and we promise we won’t disappoint—especially with your support!

Lastly, I found this interesting article from the Chicago Trib about ethnic church closures in Cleveland. It really sums up the sadness and anger felt by many as they now fight to save what they see as a cultural heritage. Read it here I am hoping that by doing so it might prompt you to reflect on how we can be more cooperative and forward thinking in Youngstown. Since our creation we have worked to show you are Polish heritage and spirit were not tied to one structure or institution, but instead was a flame that needs to be nutured from within. Perhaps we can now share that spirit with our greater community.

Do Zobaczenia!
