Warm sunny weather was a long time in coming this year so it hard to believe that we will soon facing summer solstice. To mark the occasion, albeit a bit early, Mill Creek MetroParks has teamed up with PolishYoungstown to host Sobotka, Polish Happy Hour at the Gardens TOMORROW Thursday, June 10, 2010 from 5:30-9 PM at the Cafe Terrace at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Made famous by Shakespeare’s play about mischief and summer love, this night of merrymaking—also known as St. John’s Eve—has its roots in magical pagan rituals that honored two important elements: Fire and Water. Many cultures continue to celebrate the ancient tradition by burning bonfires, bathing in open waters at sunset, and sing and dance until midnight. Young maidens dressed in white, with wreaths of yellow and white wild flowers upon their heads, would set afloat candled wreaths on the rivers, in hopes that a fitting mate would find the wreath when fishing and fall in love with them. (We will offer a seasonal wreathmaking demonstration and workshop so you can try your luck on Lake Glacier!) In that spirit, our celebration’s summery signature cocktail will include be the Ciekawa Prawiczka or “Curious Maiden” made with Żubrówka, Adamba’s Bison Grass vodka. Free appetizers and Polish dining specials will be featured in the Garden Café and live music and sing-a-long will be provided by our own Honk Rocky and the Jammers. This is sure to be a lovely event enjoyed by those who aren’t Polish too, so bring your friends and neighbors.

And if that isn’t enough, Cleveland Society of Poles is following it up with Polish Nite at Progressive Field on Friday, June 11th as the Indians take on the Washington Nationals. Met at Gate A to enjoy the fun of polkaing before, parading in, marching around the field then enjoying the game. ESPN’s Michael Reghi (WKNR 850 AM) will be there at 6 PM to polka and talk about all the great Polish-American Baseball players elected to the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame. Reghi shared a list of Polish players HYPERLINK TO LIST with us and will be “Bringing it Strong” while joining the PolishYoungstown carpool for the hospitality, food and view of the fireworks from Sokolowski's University Inn across the river in Tremont post game. The $12 tickets are still available by calling (216) 478-0120. Want to carpool with a gang of us? Call 330-646-4082.  If you can’t make this game, don’t miss Polish Happy Hour at the Scrapper’s in Niles on July 8th!

Our trip to Poland departs Monday June 14th.  Aundréa and her daughter D’Ella are very excited and plan to share the progress of our Poland trip as it happens using our website and new media sites, like Twitter and Facebook. So if you haven’t signed up, do so this week!

They aren’t the only ones traveling to Poland this summer. South Range Middle School teacher Gwen Spitz and her recently graduated son, Hunter, have been selected to be instructors at the Kosciuszko Foundation Arts Enriched English Camp next month. Having attended the Polish Art Club session on the program, Spitz now will be teaching drama to the approximately 50 teenagers, ages 13-15, and, in addition to daily class, will be putting on a play based on the life of Frederick Chopin, in honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth. Neither she nor Hunter speaks Polish, but they are not deterred. They were attracted to the creative aspects of teaching at an arts-based camp. She also teaches Anne Frank/Holocaust units in her local classes so looks forward to seeing Auschwitz first-hand and bringing back her account of it for her students. Fr. Joseph Rudjak will be a returning teacher to this same program this year.

If you aren’t traveling to the Old Country this summer, the next best thing is planning to attend Polish Day! We are just completing a website full of info about this year’s exciting plans. We also are now accepting basket donations, vendor tables, sponsorship and program advertisements and searching for volunteers to make our biggest event of the year the best possible. Last year we entertained more than 1100 people and this year we’ve worked out some of the kinks! Join in the fun by contacting a PolishYoungstown Team Member now to participate!
