Irena Sendler takes the crying baby into her arms, turns her back on the hysterical mother, and walks off into the night. If she's caught, she and the baby will die.

"Promise me my child will live!" the mother cries desperately after her.

She turns for a moment. "I can't promise that. But I can promise that if he stays with you, he will die."

Irena Sendlerowa saw this image in her dreams countless times over the years, heard the children's cries as they were pulled from their mothers' grasp; each time it is another mother screaming behind her. To the children, she seemed a merciless captor; in truth, she was the agent to save their lives.

A Polish Catholic social worker who served in the Polish Underground and resistance organization, Irena Sendlerowa is credited with saving 2,500 Jewish children by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto.

Her story, told partly in her own words, is the focus of the new documentary, "In the Name of Their Mothers." The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown is cooperation with the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and the YSU Center for Judaic and Holocaust Studies will present a screening of the new film on Sunday, April 25th at 1:30 PM at McKay Auditorium in the Beeghley Education Building at Youngstown State University. It is a first time cooperation between the groups as a sign of understanding of their shared histories.

Director Mary Skinner will be on hand to discuss this story from our shared experience. Learn more about it HERE. To reserve a spot for this FREE event please call 330-726-4994.

Skinner has graciously offered to extend her stay and will be available Sunday evening and all day Monday to screen the film and speak to schools or other interested groups on about not only the Holocaust and Sendler, but also on making an independent film, women in the film industry and other related topics.

M
ake plans now to participate in Polish Constitution Weekend in Cleveland on April 30-May 2. Europe's first written constitution was in Poland! It embodied many of the same democratic principals contained in our U.S. constitution. In fact, some of the U.S. Constitution’s language can be traced back to Polish philosophers whose books were on the shelf in Jefferson's library.  This common devotion to the cause of liberty and freedom is why Polish Americans celebrate the anniversary of the Polish Constitution of May 3, 1791. Learn more about the important document HERE. For more than a half century the Ohio Division of the Polish American Congress has hosted NE Ohio's Constitution celebrations. This year PolishYoungstown joined the organization and are working with them on their events. We are hosting a Polish Happy Hour on Friday night Want to car pool? Let us know!!); are sponsoring a candidate for the Miss Polonia Pageant on Saturday, and creating a float for Sunday’s Grand Parade! Won’t you join with us in the fun?
