Wesolych Dzie
ń św. Patryka

Sure we want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with our Irish brethren. This is a perfect day to talk about how much we have in common: These are two countries’ bound “by troubled histories and emergent identities, gradual and hard won struggles to take their place among the nations of the world, politically, economically and – in the widest, commonest sense of the word – culturally” according to the Ireland Poland Cultural Foundation. Ireland’s Polish community is by far the largest immigrant group in the country numbering closer to 200,000. Indeed, Polish is now spoken by more people in Ireland than the Irish language! So if any of the Hegarty’s, Milligan’s or McDonalds in your life give you grief for drinking green beer on their day, lift a pint and remind them if they were really Irish, they would be learning to sing Sto Lat!!

The Krakowiaki’s Święconka, a Polish Easter Traditions workshop and celebration, will be featured tomorrow morning at from 5-7 AM bright and early on the WKBN and WYTV. Tune in to see the gals and learn about pisanki, egg decorating, and tips on making a tasty kolachi.
Remember, this big fundraising event is Sunday March 21st from 12-4 PM at St. Stan’s Church on Williamson Ave. in Youngstown. Responding to your request, we have separated the lessons from the eating area allowing for a quieter, more focused experience. NEW this year is the participation of S&D Deli. The Pittsburgh-based Polish deli will be in town to offer tastings and taking orders for authentic special Easter items, such as kielbasa biala surowa (fresh, white sausage), the rye-inspired zurek (white borscht), and, unique, fruit- and meat-filled pierogi. Advanced orders will be delivered to Youngstown for pick up during Holy Week. How’s that for convenient? And bring the kids! There will be a performance by the Krakowiaki at 2 PM featuring new and participatory material as well as holiday traditions. Get them entered into the coloring contest that will be ongoing throughout the day (download an entry sheet) and there will even be a chance to get your picture taken as everyone’s favorite Easter item, the baranek wielkanocny (Butter Lamb)!!
