Czesc!

Last week was a busy one for Mahoning Valley Polonia! Thanks to all of you who came out to participate. Polish Happy Hour at Shakers in Liberty will be remembered most notably for the warm reception we received from this funky bar’s regulars. We have had people welcome us before, but this crew jumped right in and made us feel we were their guests!  We were floored with the stunning craftsmanship on the szopka PHH Chair Tom Kusiowski Jr. created on our behalf. We were hoping to ship this Krakow-style manger off to competition in Hamtramck but, alas, its size and delicate decorations proved too difficult to do so. Check out the photos HERE. Make sure you enjoy his work up close at our events next month. The new red PHH t-shirts indeed came in and are selling well. Why not pick up one for those on your holiday gift list….The next Polish Happy Hour Youngstown will be held Thursday, December 10 starting at 5:30 PM at Café Cimmento in downtown Youngstown.

The Krakowiaki’s Artistry of Wigilia workshop brought in some new people who had not only been out of touch with their Polish heritage and traditions, but also hadn’t heard about all the activities that we were offering around town. Larry Kozlowski did not disappoint them, engaging the crowd in stories and hands-on ornament creations that will be sure to inspire some home activities next month. Read The Vindicator story about the event HERE. St. Joseph the Provider’s kitchen staff and the Polish Arts Club did a great job feeding the crafters yummy food for the occasion, too. Thanks to all those involved for their efforts in educating our community.

Now that you are thinking about Christmas, it is time to make your reservations to share opłatek and sing Koledy at the Polish Arts Club annual Wigilia Christmas Eve Dinner on Sunday, December 20 at The Youngstown Club. This lovely event is being held for the first time at this elegant location and it’s destined to be a great afternoon. However, in order to keep it as planned, organizers need your reservations. More information is available HERE.

We are excited to announce that people have stepped forward, so we are officially offering Polish language lessons one evening a week! Now all we need is YOU! The fun, conversation-based class would be offered on Tuesday evenings from 6-8 PM at a downtown location TBD starting Jan. 12th and will run through the spring for $50 per student.  We need a minimum of 10 students. If we have more interest, we might be able to break the class into two different skill levels. Also, the teacher has said she would be available for private lessons between 3-6 PM on that same day. A class syllabus outline and registration will soon be available at polishyoungstown.com.  We look forward to this being a great cultural learning experience!
These classes would be in addition to the FREE Basic Polish classes currently being offered on Tuesday mornings 11:30-1 PM at Sts. Peter & Paul. For more information call 330-793-5925.

It may seem like an old fashioned concept, but it is still a lovely concept for a young woman to be formally introduced to society. Our young Polish women now have a chance to enjoy such an event because The Cleveland Society of Poles has an extended an invitation to us to submit young women to participate in its Debutante Ball to be held on Jan. 2, 2010.  Applications are being accepted until Nov. 26th. Requirements: Ages 16 to 24, Polish background, preferably a member of a Polish organization, never married and has no children. Prior to the event, participants will need to write an essay on a famous Pole. Participants are eligible to receive $2000 in scholarship monies.  Applications and more information are available by contacting Mitch Bienia at mitchbienia@aol.com or calling (216) 268-9960.

That is the Mitch who will be leading our trip next summer to Poland 2010. There is still time to get on board! More info HERE.
