"Sometimes a people, justly provoked and irritated, by the Tyranny and Usurpations of their Kings, take upon themselves the undoubted Right of vindicating their own liberties." --Wawrzyniec Goślicki

Polish philosopher
Wawrzyniec Goślicki didn’t write the Declaration of Independence, but he certainly influenced the author. Thomas Jefferson kept a copy of for reference in his library! This common devotion to the cause of liberty and freedom is why Polish Americans across the nation get so excited to celebrate the 3rd of May Constitution Day every year. Poland has had numerous constitutional acts during its long history, but the most significant is the one adopted on May 3, 1791. It was and it embodied many of the same democratic principles contained in our U.S. constitution. Learn more about it here.

The Proper Start
Chef Tad says appetizers are the foreplay of meals. Great appetizers get you in the mood and excited about what else lays in store for you. Similarly, bad appetizers can get things off to a bad start, leaving you wondering if the rest your experience will be any better. Poles believe in gracious hospitality and a vast array of finger food can become a dinner with plenty of vodka to wash it all done! To make sure you get off on the right foot, PolishYoungstown is excited to offer Przystawki/appetizer lessons on Sunday May 19 for its last offering this session of our Polska Kuchnia cooking education program.  Class participants will have the opportunity to try their hand at creating several unique hot and cold appetizers to add to your repertoire. Smacznego! Learn more

Let your voice be heard
The Piast Institute would like your help with the 2013 Polish American Survey.  This survey follows up on two earlier national studies that the Institute did in 2009 and 2010. The new study probes some of the key social, political and economic questions asked on the earlier studies and adds a few additional issues that have aroused public concern since.  It also probes the attitudes of Polish Americans on matters of concern to the community and their ideas about its future. The study is being conducted as a "rolling survey" over a span of three months.  Polish Americans and Poles living in America are encouraged to participate.  Be part of the voice of Polonia by clicking here

News from Poland
Poland facing, embracing its Jewish History
A new museum of Jewish history in Warsaw offered guests a sneak peek last week as part of a larger celebration of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. The event was marked with great ceremony including Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski , left, decorating Simha Rotem, one of the last living Warsaw Ghetto insurgents, with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland in front of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising memorial.  This grand event is the result of a  new generation of Poles seeking to celebrate Poland's Jewish past. Led by the city of Warsaw, Poles are making an unprecedented effort to get residents and visitors involved in four weeks of commemorative films, lectures, even a communal cleaning of the Jewish cemetery.  Get a tour of the museum on our Video of the Month and learn more about the museum here  Learn more about other news in this week’s Polish Media Watch.
