You don’t have to be an artist to look like one!
The Krakowiaki Polish Folk Circle will be hosting its annual winter workshop this Sunday, November 18, 1-5 PM at the Poland library. Folk artist Lawrence Kozlowski will be back bringing up something new this year—the opportunity for area families to make their own szopka krakowska.I have had people tell me that they have not seen these colorful, unique structures before. Learn more about them here. That is because many of our region’s ancestors are from the farms and this was a city event. And a workshop of this kind has never been offered in Ohio! Szopka making is not even publically taught in Krakow today!  Instead it has traditionally been an art form passed down from one generation of artisans to another. Yet on the first Thursday of December, crèche masters from around Poland and other parts of the world gather in the city to display their szopki in the central square and compete to have their work be selected to be displayed at the history museum throughout the Christmas season.
In the US there are classes developing in traditionally blue-collar towns like
Detroit and Pittsburgh. This makes sense because szopka making originally began as a “blue collar” art form, built by Krakow masons in their idle weeks of the Polish rainy late autumn to augment their winter incomes by constructing these structures for hire.  Since traditional Krakow szopka incorporates that city's architecture, we are even working with area artists to offer models that use elements of Youngstown area buildings (particularly its Polish churches) like they do in Detroit. The event is FREE to enter and offers Polish folk vendors, food, baked goods and refreshments available to purchase even if you don’t want to make a szopka. Unique Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers! For more information call (330) 746-8900

Yummy Holiday Treat Sale
Attendees at last week’s PHH got to sample these tasty treats when the Krakowiaki Polish Folk Circle kicked off its annual sale of sękacz cakes . Now they believe me when I say the thick, egg-rich batter makes these luscious and long lasting. The sale will run until December 3, but we can get some earlier if you want them for Thanksgiving instead of Christmas.  They will be available to taste and buy at szopka workshop too. We are also offering shipping, too, if you want to send it to friends and family far away! Call (330) 746-8900 to learn more about it and how to order here

Goralu, wracaj do hal
Start learning a little about Polish folk culture, and you will soon start hearing about the people of the Tatra Highlands, the Górals. Although romanticized, it isn’t always good. Other Poles consider the Górals uncouth, uneducated, and unwashed. Thaddeus Gromada, a retired professor of European History and one of the great authorities on Tatra Highlander culture, has written a book that sets the record straight on these mountain folks. Tatra Highlander Folk Culture in Poland and America could be ideal reading as the weather gets chill and donning those wool pants sounds pretty good. LOT soon to offer luxury in the skies
LOT Polish Airlines this week receives the long awaited Boeing 787. This is the first Dreamliner delivery to Europe. The delivery ceremony in Seattle will include numerous dignitaries such as Polish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Beata Stelmach and the Ambassador of Poland to the United States, Hon. Ryszard Schnepf. LOT has outstanding orders for seven more luxury Dreamliners. The plane will be equipped with the personal In-flight entertainment systems modern audio-video equipment, Internet access and a new delicious menu.

Learning your lineage
Holiday time spent with the family is a great time for sharing stories of the family based down through generations. It is also a time where a lot of questions are raised. One cousin heard the story one way and you heard it the other. That is where genealogy work comes in. It is great to get the information you can recorded on paper while those who know it firsthand are there to tell the tales. Thanks to services like ancestry.com it is actually easy and fun to organize and share.  This is the S.S. Palatia that my grandfather used to get here. I found this out this summer! The Warren Tribune recently called me regarding a story they were doing on this topic. Check it out here

News from Poland
U.S. stations first permanent military unit in Poland
A contingent of up to 10 American troops last week became the first ever full-time US presence in fellow NATO member Poland aimed at facilitating joint training exercises on US-made F-16 war planes. The US boots on the ground in Poland are intended to facilitate quarterly rotations of up to 250 American airmen stationed in Germany for joint training exercises with Poles on US-made F-16 warplanes and C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. The exercises are to begin next year at the Lask, Powidz and Krzesiny air force bases in central Poland and are aimed at boosting inter-operability between the NATO allies.
