You may have needed your sweatshirt, but that didn’t stop revelers from having a grand time at Majówka: Polish Happy Hour by the River  at Riverside Pavilion at B&O Station earlier this month. One Man Band Ralph Szubski led the musical entertainment which included the singers and musicians of the Friday Polka Jam at McMenamy's Restaurant in Niles. It was a true family-friendly celebration will potluck picnic that seemed to tap into the flavor of what made this monthly gathering so popular in the first place. Krakowiaki Polish Folk Circle and their choreographer Cathy Piłat Katrenich led the group in not only children’s games but a huge group polonez and trojak too! Check out the pictures here. It was a great way to kick off the beginning of nice weather and a great lead into a summer of fun Polish Happy Hours!

Congratulations Columbus Polonia!
Round of applause to Robert Brzezinski and his team at the Polish American Club for their great work with the City of Dublin to create a fitting and festive dedication ceremony and celebration for the opening of Thaddeus Kosciuszko Park. Perfect weather seemed to be a blessing on the event marking the opening of the 40 acres on the Scioto River. It was a real gathering of Ohio’s Polonia with PYTown Trustees Bernadette Zubel and Mitch Benia representing Youngstown at the event. Check out some of the pics here. Make sure you stop by and check out the park and its great historical markers the next time you head to our state capital.

Celebrate Sobotka

Mark your calendars now for
Polish Happy Hour in June. We are heading back to the Davis Center at Mill Creek Park on Thursday, June 14th 5:30- 10 PM. To mark summer solstice, albeit a bit early, we will host Sobotka. But instead of young Polish maidens dressed in white, with wreaths of yellow and white wild flowers upon their heads, it will be you making and setting afloat your candled wreaths on Lake Glacier. Will it help you find a mate? No guarantees, but worth trying your luck!  Back by popular demand: Live music by the fun, zany, and truly unique Chardon Polka Band. Get a taste of their spin on polka here

Gather with your Slavic Brethren

As long as you have your datebook out, don’t forget to mark in Simply Slavic. This downtown festival was started last year specifically to celebrate Youngstown’s Slavic community, this fun event will take place on Saturday, June 16 from Noon-midnight on Federal Plaza East. The event will include a baking contest, live music, folk dance performances, homemade food, children’s learning areas, educational exhibits and workshops and ethnic vendors. A Slavic Beer garden and the entertaining and exhilarating strains of the renowned Harmonia band will keep you dancing the csardas kolo or kolomyjka into the night! Check them out on our video of the month. Learn more

Polka Powerhouse, Legend Dies
Back when I was doing the polka circuit back in the 1980s, there was a song entitled  "I Wish that I Could Sing Like Eddie B."  It paid homage to Ed Blaczonczyk Sr.. and went on to say that no one could sing a song “quite as good as he.” On Monday the Grammy-Award winning bandleader died at age 70.  Here’s a taste of Eddie in action and my thoughts.
